47/52 - Photo Project 2013

The last 48 hours have been a BOON for my photography opportunities. I toured an historic power plant Friday afternoon, then wandered around the historic JeffVanderLou neighborhood Saturday morning and then visited the opening night of the Garden Glow at the Missouri Botanical Garden last night.

I took lots of good pictures (check out my Flickr photo stream for all of them) and am LOVING my new camera and lens (Canon 70D with Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4) but this was the hands down winner:

This exhibition at MoBot is gorgeous and totally worth braving the 21-feels-like-11 degree weather.

I need to give the poor thing a rest, so today will be a photo-less day. I'm sure I'm going to have lots of opportunities during the week.

46/52 - Photo Project 2013

Yet another busy week for me at work, yielding few photo opportunities. Last Sunday, I got lost on purpose hunting fruitlessly for fall foliage. I missed it by a week. :( Still, I found some fall color in Pere Marquette, but didn't end up liking any of them.

I acquired a new-to-me-lens off of Craigslist. I had to wait patiently for this one but it was well-worth the wait. It's a Sigma 17-70mm, f2.8-4 macro lens. To non-camera people, that means that it can see wide to a partial zoom, that I can use it in situations where there isn't a whole lot of light and I can get really close to things.

So on Saturday, when I was waiting for the performers and my crew to show up for our early load-in, I took the lens out for a spin with the freshly watered hosta plants.

I like this one the best because of the lines in the composition:

Yesterday, we had wildly weird weather - crazy storming one second, sunny skies the next. I caught a rainbow, but I'm not sure it'll make the week - I have some photo opportunities on Friday and Saturday that should produce some winners!

45/52 - Photo Project 2013

It was a quiet week for me - but I managed to capture some fall colors in Tower Grove park, some end of season growth at Shaw Nature Reserve and frisky animals at the St. Louis Zoo…

This Amur Leopard was snoozing, but opened up her eyes for me to take her photograph:

Runners up - the Somali Wild Asses have a bunch of new/new-ish foals - and one of them was particularly frisky and harassing his/her mom:

And this puma was standing on his hind legs to pop up and scare zoo-goers - normally I don't like my zoo pictures to reflect the cage, but the story was too good not to share:

And a little fall color:

I'm off to seek more fall color tomorrow, hopefully and then grabbing groceries to shop for the week. My refrigerator is absolutely empty… pathetic.

My First Sale!

I recently was in my second juried exhibition, this one at Soulard Art Market - and one of my pieces sold! This was the first time that someone whom I didn't know bought a piece of my art.

I was literally giddy from the moment I got the email and that 'art high' hasn't quite worn off yet.

It pleased me to no end that my photograph spoke to someone so much that he wanted it on his walls.

This is the piece - entitled Elevator to Nowhere:

Wright/Arcade

I hope the buyer enjoys the piece and I hope to continue to have luck with photo sales!

I've also started another website - http://www.annkphotography.com. Think of it as portfolio site - I won't be blogging on there - I've been blogging too long here to give this up.

Thanks for reading!

44/52 - Photo Project 2013

It has been yet another busy week at work, and not much time with the camera. And the one time I went for a drive, no inspiration.

Here's the only three pictures worth of consideration:

Macro Pomegrante Seeds     Flower Shop Fake Macro

Two were taken with my normal lens and one was taken with a true macro… but they all look kinda similar.

The winner this week is:

Macro Pomegrante Seeds

It's fall-related, I bought the pomegranate specifically to take photos and despite splattering pomegranate juice everywhere, it was a lot of fun.

Can you believe there is only 9 more weeks of this project? Where has the year gone??
